Accra-Ghana – March 12 – The Accra Psychiatric Hospital, Nekotech Center of Excellence and Channels United Pastors (CUP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on March 12, 2014 to work together to improve life for the mentally ill, through awareness, literacy, counselling and training campaigns. In addition, the team is preparing to host Ghana’s first Mental Health Medical Mission with doctors from Kuwait to help build the much needed capacity for mental health treatment in Ghana.

More than two million of Ghana’s nearly 25 million population have one form or another of mental illness that needs urgent attention. Unfortunately, there are only 11 psychiatrists practicing in the entire nation. Mentally ill men, women and children can be found throughout the regions of the country, some on the streets, others are given herbal treatments at home, some are taken to prayer camps, shrines, and the rest are taken to psychiatric hospitals, sometimes ‘dropped off’ and abandoned for years! Though Ghana once had about 11 psychiatric hospitals, this number has dwindled to three in three regions: Central, Eastern and Greater Accra, with the Accra Psychiatric Hospital being in the worst state, and with the highest number of patients.

‘I am pleased to be working with Princess Ocansey and her uniquely diverse team,’ said Dr Akwasi Osei, Chief Psychiatrist and Director of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital. Princess Ocansey and  Nekotech Center’s HIV/AIDS multi-faceted interventions in partnership with USA Student National Medical Association in collaboration with the USA National Medical Association, was a gigantic success in the war against HIV/AIDS in Ghana. I trust that working together with them with the same level of professionalism in Mental Health, will enable us to expand our efforts and to successfully involve our communities in the crusade against mental illness in Ghana,’ he said.

Pastor Patrick Arthur, President of the Channels United Pastors (CUP) of Channels of Blessings Global Ministry, said: ‘The Church has a critical role to play in this major national issue. Standing on the shoulders of Princess Ocansey’s Nekotech Save a Million Lives Programs, which was recognised by the USA White House in 2004 and Buckingham Palace through Save a Million Lives UK, we pray that many churches and other faith based institutions and NGO’s in Ghana will respond to our new Mental Health Literacy Program – ‘Renewed Mind:Sound Mind’ which we will be rolling out in June 2014. We are collaborating with Institutions in the USA and Canada and calling on more collaborators nationally and internationally,’ he said.

After the signing of the MOU, the delegation toured the men and women’s wards as well as the children’s ward. They were also shown the Occupational Therapy workshop, which is in dire need of renovation.

The Children’s ward touched the heart of Princess Ocansey, CEO of Nekotech, as she held and sang with the mentally ill children. ‘We are committed to doing our part to help this hospital and these dear children of God, and to bring the world renowned Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) program to Ghana. MHFA, which is now in 21 countries worldwide, was developed by Australian Betty Kitchner. This will help us to help move some of the responsibility of the early signs of mental illness to our soon to be community trained MHF Aiders, ‘ said Princess Ocansey.

‘We see a crucial need to create a National Mental Health First Aid Endowment Fund to support  national MHFA Ghana and our Literacy programs to make them affordable and accessible to as much of the nation as possible,’ said Evangelist Mensah-Sarbah, Vice President of CUP.

‘ Our goal is to see every constituency, every community and every church, as well as all faith based institutions, companies, NGO’s, Traditional and Governmental bodies in Ghana armed with the MHFA and the Literacy Programs,’ said Deacon Peter Andoh, Legal Migration Minister for CUP. ‘We are also advocating for a mental health assessment to be added to the mental health bill for all workers going to work legally overseas, and as well, a requirement for key positions in Government, media, and other nationally critical jobs,’ he concluded.

‘We intend to use sports and other programs to engage our communities nationally and therefore  invite all stakeholders, international donors, media houses and corporate partners to come on board so we can win this war together,’ said Pastor Eric Madugu, Sports Minister for CUP.

The Accra Psychiatric Hospital is about 100 years old. Through the tireless efforts of its devoted Director, Dr. Akwasi Osei, much strides have been made, though much more needs to be done.  The Government is to be congratulated for the passing of the Mental Health Bill and the formation of the new Mental Health Authourity.

The  Nekotech Center of Excellence is a non-profit NGO committed to rural development in six key areas: Health care, Education, Technology, Entertainment, Economic and Spiritual Development. The Center was founded in 1998 by Princess Ocansey of Ada, and the late Hollywood entertainer, Nene Katey Ocansey-a.k.a. Mr Isaac Hayes, with assistance from Rev. Alfreddie Johnson, Denzel Washington, Tom Cruise, John Travolta. Actor Steven Seagal co-founded the Save a Million Lives Program with Princess Ocansey, and Veronica Birkenstock co-founded the Angels of Hope Orphan Support Program with Utah’s Love in Action Team. Nekotech’s proprietary Mental Health Literacy Program is ‘My Mind Matters’ – Mental Health is Wealth.

Channels of Blessings Global Ministry is a Christ-Centered Training Institution committed to re-engineering the destinies of its students through the practical training and application of the transformational Word of God. The Channels United Pastors (CUP) is a body of 72 interdenominational Pastors working together on common issues of Poverty reduction, Legal Migration, Job Creation, Skills Development, School to Workplace Preparation Training, Kingdom and Soft Skills Training, Certified Global Worker Program, and the proprietary Christian Renewed Mind: Sound Mind - Mental Health Literacy Program.

Mental Health First Aid is an in-person training that teaches how to help persons developing a mental illness or in a crisis. The training will certify participants as Mental Health First Aiders and Instructors and teach them to identify, understand and respond to adults and youth experiencing signs of mental illness and substance use disorders. Participants will learn warning signs and risk factors for depression, anxiety disorders, trauma, psychotic disorders, eating disorders and substance use. The course teaches a 5-step action plan to help an individual in crisis connect to professional care and participants will learn what resources are available in the community.
